Rockin' J

A rambler amidst the trees.

Project overview

This home sits carefully around oak groves in the Hill Country of Texas. We designed a low and modest single-story home for our clients planning to relocate from Seattle to Texas for their golden years.

Concept

Desiring a central open living space, with separate wings for sleeping and hobbies, we extended the plan along intersecting spines. A large deck and optimally placed windows allow the couple to enjoy sun screened through the oaks. As the clients would be working with a Texas-based builder, we detailed the home to suit a variety of robust construction techniques.

Site

We focused on protecting and preserving the variety of mature oaks trees spread across this gently sloping 5-acre parcel. While nestling the home between them was a challenge, it paid off, serving both to screen views to neighbors and increase shade around the home.
