What is the most efficient way to heat a home?

Findings

Heat pumps are 2–5 times more energy efficient than natural gas or electric resistance heating. However, many heat pumps require refrigerant that—when leaked into the atmosphere—is enormously damaging to the environment. We value low global warming potential (GWP) technology like the Sanden CO₂ air-to-water heat pump. This is a split system, meaning the heat pump is located outdoors and does not inadvertently cool the interior of the house. It provides both the domestic hot water and space heating in one system (but cannot cool). The system circulates warm water through radiators around the house, providing silent and ductless heating.
